LEADERSHIP
"Attitude reflects leadership" is one of my favorite quotes from the movie Remember the Titans. I strive to bring a positive attitude in whatever I do personally or professionally. Below are selected achievements and management beliefs.
Board Development
I have been able to cultivate top caliber board members and district operations personnel in all Council assignments. Many I have helped recruit have gone on to key leadership roles in the Council including Council President, Council Commissioner, Membership Chair and many program committee vice presidents and chairs.
Help to coordinate and conduct new board member orientations.
District Operations
Experienced in recruiting, training, and engaging the right district volunteers to ensure the success of the district and council increasing the number of volunteers in each assignment.
Provided leadership in the restructuring of two districts to best support the needs of our customers.
Have served in both rural and urban districts having success at each level.
Leadership and Development
Committed to leadership by example and living by the Scout Oath and Law.
Build consensus among volunteers at all levels of council operations.
Served as interim Scout Executive from November 1 2017– February 15, 2018.
Tenured, well rounded career with extensive and successful experience in urban, suburban, inner city and rural communities.
Able to work with volunteers and staff to make tough decisions.
Committed to learning from and teaching others to achieve the organization’s full potential.
Successful record of hiring professional and support staff with limited staff turnover. Staff I have helped hire and supervised have gone on to many positions including: Scout Executive, Director of Development, Senior District Executives, Field Director, and Camp Director.
Strategic Planning and Initiatives
Experienced in working with volunteers at all levels to develop and execute comprehensive strategic plans in three separate councils.
Organized and led an ad hoc committee made up of members of the Enterprise and Risk Management Committee, Camping Committee, Finance Committee and medical professionals to develop a comprehensive COVID 19 response plan.
Gave leadership to the development of our current Camping Strategic Plan, which emphasized a simpler approach to focus on fewer goals and provide greater results through improved promotions and having a solid maintenance plan.
Possess effective relationships with area and regional directors and key members of the national staff that allows an open dialogue to share resources, ideas and best practices.
Communication
I enjoy communicating one-on-one with key stakeholders, volunteers and donors through regular visits to community networking functions, local chamber initiatives and leader meetings.
I have worked to integrate technology into all aspects of council operations including the use of online event registrations which help free up valuable support staff time. We were using remote meeting technology before the COVID 19 epidemic made it the "new normal".
I have demonstrated the courage to communicate tough decisions to the Scouting family while maintaining their respect for the organization. This has included camp closures and fee increases as well as making and communicating difficult HR decisions.
I hold my staff and self accountable for providing superior customer service. Having served as a unit volunteer helps me see Scouting from both the council and volunteer side of things.
